Spyro the Dragon is the main protagonist and titular character of the Spyro franchise. He has appeared in the original series, The Legend of Spyro series, and the Skylanders series.

Development[]

Spyro was designed by artist Charles Zembillas. In early artwork Spyro was designed to be large, but programmer Alex Hasting would comment that such a design would be too hard to animate and that it'd need to be more appealing to Spyro the Dragon's target demographic. Another thing that would change is Spyro's name, which was initially Pete, this changing due to the similarity to Disney's Pete's Dragon. The name Pyro was thought of; however, it was considered too mature. A Sony marketing director would then suggest the name Spyro, which stuck.[1]

Originally, Spyro was green, but designer Craig Stitt was concerned that Spyro would blend into the background of the game. So, the color was reconsidered, the designers eventually choosing purple.[1]
